Summer has a way of changing our routines.

Between vacations, pool days, later nights, road trips, camps and more relaxed schedules, it’s easy for everyday habits to shift. And while summer should absolutely be enjoyed, a few seasonal habits can be harder on your teeth than you might realize.

The good news? You don’t have to overcomplicate it. A few small choices can help protect your smile while still letting you enjoy everything the season has to offer.

Sipping sugary or acidic drinks throughout the day

Iced coffee, lemonade, soda, sports drinks and sweet tea are all common summer favorites. The issue is not always the drink itself, but how long your teeth are exposed to it.

When you sip sugary or acidic drinks slowly over a long period of time, your teeth get repeated exposure throughout the day. That can increase the risk of enamel wear and cavities.

You don’t have to give up your favorite summer drink entirely. It just helps to enjoy it with a meal, drink water afterward and avoid slowly sipping it for hours.

Chewing ice

We get it. When it’s hot outside, chewing ice can feel satisfying.

Unfortunately, ice is hard enough to chip, crack or damage teeth, especially if you already have dental work like crowns, fillings or bonding. It can also irritate sensitive teeth.

If you like cold drinks, try letting the ice do its job in the glass instead of chewing it. Your teeth will thank you.

Falling out of your normal routine

Summer schedules can be fun, but they can also be inconsistent. Kids may be out of school, families may be traveling, and bedtime routines may look different from week to week.

That can make it easier to skip brushing, forget to floss or rush through your usual dental care routine.

A simple way to stay on track is to keep toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss easy to access, especially when traveling. For kids, it can help to keep brushing and flossing tied to something consistent, like breakfast and bedtime, even when the rest of the day looks different.

More snacking between meals

Summer often comes with more grazing. Snacks at the pool, treats on vacation, concession stand food, popsicles, chips and sweets can all become part of the season.

Frequent snacking gives cavity-causing bacteria more opportunities to feed on sugars and starches. Again, this doesn’t mean you need to skip every treat. It just helps to balance snacks with water, choose tooth-friendly options when you can and keep up with brushing and flossing.

Forgetting retainers, aligners or nightguards while traveling

If you wear a retainer, aligners or a nightguard, summer travel can throw off your routine quickly. These appliances are easy to forget at home, wrap in a napkin, leave in a hotel room or misplace during a busy day.

Before you leave for a trip, make sure your dental appliances are on your packing list. Bring their case, use it every time and avoid placing them loose in a bag or wrapped in tissue.

Not drinking enough water

Water is one of the easiest ways to support your oral health, especially in the summer.

Staying hydrated helps with saliva production, which plays an important role in rinsing away food particles and supporting a healthy mouth. Water can also help rinse your teeth after snacks, coffee, sports drinks or other summer favorites.

If your days are busier or hotter than usual, keep water nearby and make it part of your routine.

Keep summer simple and your smile healthy

Summer does not have to be perfect to be healthy. You can enjoy the iced coffee, the road trip snacks, the family vacations and the slower routines while still taking care of your teeth.

A few small habits can make a big difference:

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Brush twice a day.
  • Floss daily.
  • Avoid chewing ice.
  • Pack your dental essentials when you travel.
  • Schedule your regular cleaning if it’s been a while.
